Nürburgring legend and former Top Gear host Schmitz passes away after a long battle with cancer. Sabine Schmitz was German racing legend, having worked for several years as racing instructor at the Nürburgring, a track she knew like the back of her hand, and her impressive record at the 'ring earned her the nickname of "Queen of the Nürburgring". She also appeared on several episodes of BBC's Top Gear, first appearing on the show back in 2004, and she then went on to become a co-presenter of the show (along with Rory Reid, Matt LeBlanc, Chris Evans, Chris Harris and Eddie Jordan) in 2016.
Last year, Sabine revealed she had been secretly battling cancer since 2017 and she explained in a heartfelt note her protracted absence from the racing scene. The sad news of her passing came in earlier today, when the Nürburgring shared a statement, which read: "The Nürburgring has lost its most famous female racing driver. Sabine Schmitz passed away far too early after a long illness. We will miss her and her cheerful nature. Rest in peace Sabine!"
In order to commemorate her successes, I would like to share with you one of the greatest challenges she ever attempted.
Back in the old days of Top Gear, Richard Hammond wanted to see if it was possible to lap the Nürburgring in under ten minutes. In order to do this, he needed one-up from the Stig: Sabine Schmitz who knew the track like the back of her hand.
In these two clips, you will see her attempt some very impressive manoeuvres to try and reach the goal. But can she do it? Watch the videos to find out!
